Morels are one of the most sought-after culinary mushrooms in the world. Fire morels can only be found in burnt forests. Timing is imperative when hunting fire morels and these fungi are exceptionally hard to see.

This photograph captures the first time Martin Martini found fire morels (Morchella eximia) in WA. A 10-hour round trip, flooded bushland, and a very small, early fruiting.

Martin's boots take centre stage in this image, demonstrating the difficulty of seeing these mushrooms in situ - everything looks like morels when you're looking for morels. They can be standing in front of you and you can't even see them.
